Welcome to Indonesia’s Coral Triangle

You’ve arrived in one of the most vital marine ecosystems on Earth — a region often called the Amazon of the seas.

Where coral thrives, life follows

Here, the ocean brims with extraordinary biodiversity. These waters shelter 60% of all known coral species and more than 2,000 species of fish — a living reef crossroads for the planet. For the 21 million Indonesians who rely on coastal ecosystems for food and jobs, including 2.3 million small-scale fishers, healthy reefs are essential for day-to-day survival and long-term security.

Coral reefs are lifelines, economies, and cultural anchors.

What’s at stake and what’s possible

Indonesia is the world’s second-largest producer of wild-caught fish, and more than 90% of its fishing fleet is small-scale. Reefs in the Coral Triangle are a foundation of this productivity, sustaining food security and coastal economies.

But this coastal haven is under pressure. Overfishing, habitat destruction, and climate impacts threaten both biodiversity and the communities that depend on it.

To turn the tide, Rare is partnering with local leaders and fishers.

Slideshow of local leaders and advocates across Rare's network in Indonesia.

In partnership with Indigenous leaders in Raja Ampat, Rare has helped establish 19 community-managed reserves, covering 815 square miles, and reinforced protections across 12 additional areas spanning 198 square miles. At the heart of this success: 200 local leaders trained to steward their waters.

Fishing villages are restoring balance to their waters. Community patrols are safeguarding coral nurseries. Indigenous leaders are shaping policy and managing their future.

You can help sustain this momentum.

It takes just $400 per year to protect one square mile of community-led coastal fisheries.
